For our meeting #89 we announce the GREEN-GREEP (Gree-Gree)…the Greening of the Grassroots Emergency Election Protection Coalition to conjoin the battle for grassroots democracy with renewables and saving our planet from King CONG (Coal, Oil, Nukes & Gas).  

 

We’re first joined by BISI WILLIAMS, BRUCE MAU & AMARIS,  who introduce us to the Massive Change Network.

 

We then enter the deep mists of the nationwide Gerrymandering fiasco, starting with Ohio’s Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor.  A veritable Profile in Courage, O’Connor has single-handed blocked four versions of an outrageous attempt by Buckeye Republicans to yet again hijack the state’s Congressional and State House districts.  Now (of course) her fellow Republicans want to impeach her. 

 

The Ohio war is being duplicated in New York, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Nevada and everywhere else one of the major parties thinks it can steal a few Congressional/Legislative seats.  

 

As explained by Constitutional lawyer JOEL SEGAL, the legal miasma has taken a quantum leap with Federal Judge Mark E. Walker, who has ruled that Florida’s new election laws are racist, and demand the “pre-clearance” mandated by the Civil and Voting Rights Acts of the 1960s.    His ruling’s journey to the US Supreme Court will denote one of the nation’s most critical legal journeys.

Our GREEP zoom #87 leaps into the issue of Civic Duty Voting with the great MILES RAPOPORT, former Secretary of State of Connecticut.

 

Miles has served as president of Common Cause and Demos.  He is most recently the co-author, with E.J. DIONNE, of 100% Democracy being published this week by New Press.

 

Miles’s discussion of universal mandatory voting is groundbreaking and fascinating.  He’s a great presenter and his hour with us is utterly riveting.  

 

We then hear from MYLA RESON and election protection activists SUSAN YOUNG and TERRI BURKE about the major challenges facing voters in Texas.  Leading that agenda is a brutal race for Attorney-General, where a grassroots victory could be a game-changer nationwide.

 

We follow with an astounding dive into the unreal rabbit hole that is Ohio.  As we hear from RACHEL COYLE,  DAVID DEWITT and STEVE CARUSO, GOP fanatics have trashed public mandates to draw fair and balanced districts for upcoming elections for the state legislature and US Congress.  

 

The result is that Ohio does not have Congressional districts or state Legislative districts with which conduct a primary election.  It would be hard to invent a wackier debacle.  STAY TUNED!!!

At this 86th zoom session of the Grassroots Emergency Election Protection Coalition we are joined by activist NICOLE DVORAK who has pioneered powerful new means of tracking the purchase of politicians by giant corporations.  Nicole’s work offers a roadmap for building the critical data base needed to expose exactly how our democracy is being destroyed by big money.

 

We also proudly host NANCY MACLEAN of Duke University, whose landmark DEMOCRACY IN CHAINS digs deep into the destruction of our essential government structured by a greedy Uber-rich class of fascists and autocrats who threaten us all.  Nancy is interviewed by the great Tatanka Bricca, whose detailed knowledge of what plagues our electoral system sets a critical framework from a truly unique discussion.

 

Central Ohio’s STEVE CARUSO also reports on the insane attempts of the Ohio Republican Party to sabotage efforts to draw fair representational districts in the Buckeye State. Those assaults have been shockingly resisted by Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Ohio Supreme Court in one of the great sagas of actual courage in American politics.

Though sane Republicans are an endangered species, there seem to be enough in some states to fight for our democracy.

We’re then joined by the great JENNIFER ROBERTS of the Carter Center to discuss serious push-back against partisan gerrymandering.  

Unfortunately, we receive news during the zoom that the US Supreme Court has refused to uphold an Alabama lower court decision throwing out that state's horrific partisan re-districting.  But it’s a provisional ruling, so there’s hope.

We’re then led by the great JOEL SEGAL in an in-depth discussion of how to fight back against the Trump/Bannon fascist coup being staged now in the US.  

We’re also joined by HAL GINSBERG of Our Revolution, TATANKA BRICCA from the Romero Institute, MIKE HERSH from Progressive Democrats of America and many powerful others.
